How the Parts of a Septic System Work Together

A septic system is a team. Each part has a job, and each one depends on the others. Here is the path your water takes, based on the EPA's guide to how septic systems work.

1. The main drain pipe. All the water from your house leaves through one main drain pipe. It flows into the septic tank.

2. The septic tank. The tank is buried and watertight. It is usually made of concrete, fiberglass, or plastic. It holds the water long enough for solids to sink and form sludge. Oil and grease float up and form scum. Walls inside the tank and a T-shaped outlet help keep the sludge and scum from leaving.

3. The distribution box. UGA Extension notes that some systems have a distribution box between the tank and the drain lines.

4. The drain field. The liquid, called effluent, flows on to the drain field. UGA says it trickles out of the drain lines, through a layer of gravel, and into the soil.

5. The soil. This is the last stop. The EPA says the soil treats the water as it soaks through.
