Yes. In Georgia, a septic repair is not a weekend project you can just dig into. Georgia's septic rules say that repairs, replacements, and additions to a system must be permitted and inspected. The permit comes from your county health department.

 

Here is what that means for you as the homeowner:

• The county looks at the site before it gives a permit.

• The work should be done by a state-certified contractor. The Georgia Department of Public Health's homeowner guide says repairs need a repair permit. It says a certified contractor should do the work.

• When the work is done, the county must make a final inspection and give written approval. Until then, it can't be covered up or used.

• If someone later digs up or changes parts of the system, that approval can be voided.

 

So the permit is not just paperwork. It means the county checks the repair before it gets buried in your yard.
